St Helen’s Place

St Helen’s Place

Project Overview:

  • Client: Brookfield Multiplex

  • Type of Works: Demolition, Façade Retention, Bulk Excavation, Piling, Groundworks, RC Structure.

  • Value: £9.3m

  • Project Start Date: January 2012

  • Location: City of London

Appointed as sub-contractor on this highly complex scheme carried out for Multiplex to complete the top down Demolition of the existing building and construct a multi-level basement and RC structure above.

The existing Portland Stone façade was suspended in mid-air with a hydraulic retention system. The new contiguous piled wall, which was up to 1050mm in diameter, formed the support for the multi-level basement. On the rear façade the contiguous piled wall was installed just 900mm from an existing 11th Century Grade 1 listed Church, whereby movement had to be limited to 8mm.

Due to the 400 year old church bounding the site, the project has strict controls for noise and vibration. Installation of noise and vibration monitors helped to quantify the implications of any perceived issues. Methodologies were adapted along with working times to limit the implications on more sensitive neighbours and strictly adhere to church ‘quiet times’ to reduce our impact on their services.

Our methodology adaption’s included significant use of core drilling and track sawing to separate our works from the adjoining structures.
